Orthodontics

Most people hear “orthodontics” and immediately picture braces. And while that’s a big part of what we do, the truth is, orthodontics at Walker & Wright Orthodontics in Freeport IL and Monroe WI is about so much more than just straightening teeth. It’s about improving the way your teeth, jaw, and bite work together to create a smile that’s as functional as it is confident.

Whether you’re brand new to the idea of orthodontic treatment or just want to understand what it actually involves, you’re in the right place.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dental specialty focused on diagnosing and correcting misalignment in the teeth and jaw. That can include crooked teeth, bite issues, or problems with spacing. An orthodontist doesn’t just make teeth look nice—they make sure your bite is balanced, your smile is stable, and your overall oral health is set up for long-term success.

And unlike general dentists, orthodontists go through additional years of training to master the art and science of alignment.

Untreated Risks

Let’s be real—having a straight smile feels amazing. But beyond the cosmetic benefits, orthodontic treatment also plays a major role in preventing bigger dental problems down the road.

Untreated alignment issues can lead to:

  • Uneven wear on teeth
  • Jaw discomfort or popping
  • Tooth decay (crooked teeth are harder to clean)
  • Gum problems
  • Speech or chewing difficulties

A healthy bite makes a difference in your daily comfort and your lifelong dental health.

Who Needs Orthodontic Care?

The truth? Just about anyone. Children, teens, and adults can all benefit from orthodontic treatment at different stages of life.

You might benefit from treatment if you have:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Teeth that have shifted after past treatment
  • Jaw pain or tension
  • A desire for a straighter smile

Even if you’re unsure, an initial consultation with an orthodontist can give you clarity and a clear path forward.

The Tools We Use to Straighten Smiles

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to orthodontics. Treatment options today are designed to fit a wide range of needs, preferences, and lifestyles.

Braces
Still one of the most reliable solutions out there. Metal braces are more comfortable and efficient than ever, and we also offer clear (ceramic) versions that are less noticeable.

Clear Aligners
Invisalign® and other clear aligner systems use a series of removable trays to move your teeth gradually. Great for adults and teens who want a low-profile, flexible option.

Early Intervention
For children, early monitoring and interceptive treatment (sometimes called Phase 1) can help guide jaw growth and make future treatment simpler—or even unnecessary.

Retainers
Once your teeth are aligned, retainers help hold everything in place. We’ll create one that fits your smile and your lifestyle.

What to Expect from the Process

Orthodontic care starts with a consultation—a pressure-free appointment where we take digital scans, evaluate your bite, and talk about your goals. From there, we build a customized treatment plan that lays out every step.

Most treatments last between 12 and 24 months, depending on the complexity of your case. We’ll walk with you through the process, with regular check-ins to keep things on track and answer your questions.

It’s Never Too Late (Or Too Early)

We recommend an orthodontic evaluation around age 7, but that doesn’t mean treatment starts right away. Early visits help us monitor jaw growth and spot potential issues before they become bigger problems. For adults, age isn’t a barrier at all—more people over 30 are choosing to straighten their teeth than ever before.
Modern orthodontics makes treatment more comfortable, discreet, and accessible than it’s ever been.

A Better Bite, A Healthier Smile

Orthodontics is about more than aesthetics. It’s about setting your teeth and jaw up for success—so you can eat, speak, smile, and live with confidence and comfort.
